On July 7, 2023, the Cubs accomplished something they had never done since the club’s inception in 1876: beat the Yankees in their home stadium. Coming into the game, the Cubs had a 0–12 record against the Bronx Bombers in New York, including being swept in the World Series in 1932 and 1938.
It was not until interleague play was introduced in the early 2000s that games against the Yankees could take place during the regular season. Chicago lost games in 2005, 2014, and 2022 clashes. Interestingly, the winning pitcher in the most recent effort at Yankee Stadium was Jameson Taillon, who previously pitched for New York. Coming into the game with a 2–6 record and a 6.93 ERA, Taillon surprised the home fans by throwing eight scoreless innings that featured only a single hit by Gleyber Torres.
This superlative effort put Taillon in heady company, as the last pitcher who accomplished that feat against the Yankees was Daniel Cabrera of the Orioles. Since 1990, Pedro Martinez and Bartolo Colon are the only other pitchers to throw at least eight innings and allow the pinstripes only a single hit.
